The Houston Yacht Club (HYC), established in 1897, is the oldest yacht club in Texas. Its inaugural meeting occurred on February 2, 1898, in Houston's Binz Building, with Dan E. Kennedy, a former Texas Ranger, elected as the first commodore.
Initially, the club's activities centered around Buffalo Bayou near Allen's Landing, where members organized regattas and boating events. In 1905, the club received a charter as the Houston Yacht & Power Boat Club, reflecting its commitment to both sailing and powerboating. Lumber magnate John H.
